Maglev rerouted and made safer… but at a cost.
Following the proposal to extend Shanghai’s Maglev system, local residents raised their concerns over it’s routing and general safety, fearing that passes by could injure themselves on the ‘unprotected’ track.
This has lead to a redirecting of the route, making it an altogether longer journey and a redesigning of the track system which will include a barrier being erected so that passers by are protected from the Maglev hardware.
Because of these proposed changes, the total sum of the project has gone up from 200m Yuan per km (0.6 miles) to 500m Yuan (£35m).
The extension will be a total of 31.8kim (19.87 miles) so it’s not going to be cheap.
Here are my thoughts about the whole affair….. it’s not right! Why? Because China have been spending so much money on designer buildings, not just those for the Olympics but some for their own ‘patriotic’ needs, which to my calculations must be costing them an arm and a leg and now they have no money left for things which are essentially VITAL for the environment and future air quality of Shanghai. Basically they’re putting industry before humanity as I see it.
Anyway, I hope that they see that it will be worth every Yuan they spend and will go ahead with the project with little resistance.
